Director Chris Columbus says “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” is a remake of Home Alone, but in New York. Beat for beat, right down to the older, wise misunderstood sage for Kevin.
Old Man Marley was a better sage like character for Kevin. In the first film, he had fears to overcome. He was afraid of his furnace, the old man, being alone etc...
Kevin learns to not judge a book by its cover. The old man talks about seeing his granddaughter practice because he’s not welcome to the live event later. His son won’t have anything to do with him. Kevin learns a lesson from Marley, and Kevin teaches him a lesson. It’s heartwarming. “No matter how mad I got, I would want to see my dad.” It reminds the old man how he felt about his son when he was a boy and how his little boy used to feel about him. It also reminds Kevin he needs his family. He loves them. At the end, we see Old Man Marley save Kevin’s life and reunite with his family. There was a purpose for his role. It was a catalyst.
In “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, the Pigeon Lady feels tacked on. Forced because they needed that Old Man Marley character. Well, I think Mr. Duncan was that character. He’s so much better. He gives Kevin that heartwarming speech, it helps ground Kevin and remind him what the holidays are really about (something Kevin has forgotten). The sick kids and donating to them. This is also a catalyst for Kevin to later fight Harry and Marv again. Otherwise he would have no reason to.
The Pigeon Lady is some gross old lady living in the park. I guess Kevin learns the lesson to not judge a book by its cover again... okay. But she provides nothing to the plot. Her story makes no sense. “Why are you like this?” ... she replies, “I got my heat broken, I’m afraid to get it broken again.” That’s why you’re homeless and live with birds? Seriously? And whose to say you’re not just a schizophrenic homeless lady? Or a con artist who thinks Kevin will give her money? Plus, what does she teach Kevin? He doesn’t save her in any way. In the original, Kevin helps Old Man Marley reunite with his kids. In part 2, he helps Mr. Duncan keep his money so he can donate it to the Children’s Hospital. What about Pigeon Lady? He gives her a ceramic turtle dove ornament? She doesn’t even have a tree to put it on. And they are going to be friends? How? She lives in NY, he lives in Chicago. He’s a kid. She’s a grown woman. Nothing changes. She is still a homeless lady in the park living with birds.
Are we supposed to assume Kevin’s little skate analogy changes her heart? If so, why not show her going to a shelter? Giving us (the audience) the indication she’s making the change. Trusting people again? Or have Kevin’s mom or dad say “We will do what we can to help her” ??!? Idk, anything. Or how about this? Just cut her out of the movie? Because she’s not important to the plot at all. How about having an extra scene of Duncan delivering money to the Children’s Hospital on the news in their hotel room and Kevin smiling with that amazing/heartwarming John Williams score playing in the background?
