Old Man Marley
I think the purpose of his encounter with the pigeon lady is all for her benefit. She is an outcast and lonely and he befriends her and we are suppose to assume that his interactions with her will give her a new found hope in people. I actually think showing her change is unnecessary, because the whole point of the encounter alludes to it anyway.
The entire movie is just a lazy (sometimes fun) retread of the original and the second half of the movie is the worst of the retreading.
