So what's the right religion?

It wasn't Vatican policy, it was the various Bishops around the world. As moviemouth noted, they put too much stock in forgiveness, & failed to realize how deeply-seated those that are sexually attracted to children, have something seriously wrong with them, & should not be placed anywhere near where they could gain access to vulnerable children.
