It seems like the image of God atheists most want to debate.

I can't speak for all atheists, but I have no issue with the notion of a necessary Cause per se. It is more the unevidenced suggestion of whole new magical reality that is the issue.

You can't have a debate about God when people don't agree on what 'God' is.

True; but it would be a start if one can at least understand the difference between agnosticism and atheism.
