But clearly the Christian doctrine teaches both that any sin, no matter how innocuous it seems to us humans, is just as bad as the most heinous vile sin as far as God is concernedI don't think that follows. Just because all sins are forgivable, doesn't mean they're equally forgivable. But is that so unreasonable? Consider parole hearings - whether the prisoner has repented and reformed his/her character is taken as a good reason to grant parole. I think most would agree with that stance. So why can't God decide that someone has reformed enough that they no longer merit eternal damnation? And don't forget, Catholics believe in purgatory so it's not like the sinners get off scot free.
