Well, yes, all have equal potential to be forgiven, but obviously it takes a much greater effort to repent of the bigger sins. Just saying sorry ain't going to cut it.

No. This is what the Catholic church says on the matter:
If they die truly repentant in charity before they have made satisfaction by worthy fruits of penance for (sins) committed and omitted, their souls are cleansed after death by purgatorical or purifying punishments
So you have to be repentant to get to purgatory but if you were not punished for your sins on Earth, then you are punished in Purgatory to cleanse you for Heaven.

As to your last point, I was only responding to those who seemed to think this guy couldn't be forgiven per the RCC doctrine. I understand about the 'get out of jail free' card but take it that there are some who apparently believe in all this stuff yet somehow wish to hedge when to such heinous crimes of violence. It's, 'we know that someone like that reeeallllllyyyyy can't be sincere when they repent, so we just know that SOB is gonna burn.'

Well, I suppose people will have their own opinions, but the idea for Catholics is that only God can know for sure how repentant someone is.

What do Catholics consider 'punishment' on earth to entail...something meted out by others, or can it be just mental anguish over one's deeds?
