What do Catholics consider 'punishment' on earth to entail...something meted out by others, or can it be just mental anguish over one's deeds? I have heard they have these things that priests mete out for sinning and if you do them, like saying prayers over and over again etc.that you receive 'absolution'. Cool system. No wonder Catholic priests reoffend multiple times! It's a pretty tight system they've got themselves. One gets to offend others and then gets forgiven without having the inconvenience of apologizing or making restitution to the offended person. in fact, the offended person can be considered NOT following Christ's teachings if they don't forgive the offender.
