It’s not for me to say if Indian-based nicknames are offensive or not as I’m not of Native American descent. But it doesn’t seem 100% ok either. Outside of Notre Dame and the Montreal Canadiens, is there another big 4 team named after a group of people like that? Well there are lots named after a group of people, just not really after an ethnicity of people. But this is kind of an odd one. As I heard it described by one representative of a native group, 'There's no such thing as native Americans.' That was a weird thing to hear because we've been so used to hearing that term, but individual tribal groups consider themselves their own 'nationality' in some cases. And I heard an interview with this woman railing against the 'Redskins' name as she was a representative of a group lobbying to have it changed, and she kept referring to her people as 'Indians.' It's all very confusing. But I think the Cleveland Indians make a target of themselves for this kind of thing because that logo was so ridiculous. The name may not be, or may be to some and not others, or whatever, but that logo sorta sets a bad track record for them.
