The Redskins were proud to call themselves the Redskins. It was used in a complimentary fashion. They weren't called the Washington Stupid Idiots.

Add that to the tearing down statues of Christopher Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, etc. And it's just a bunch of white hating assholes destroying public property based on ignorance and hate.
