Good list. I loved seeing “This Is Not A Test” among your 40. I saw this on TV probably not long after its release in 1962. It haunted me down through the decades until I found it online a while back. It still retains its power.
I’ve got a little list of 25 of my own drawn from a much longer list of favorites. I have put them chronologically rather than go through the agony of rating which I never find satisfactory. Anyway, enjoy.
Metropolis / Fritz Lang (1927) Island of Lost Souls / Erle C. Kenton (1932) Berkeley Square / Frank Lloyd (1933) The Thing from Another World / Christian Nyby (1951) Them! / Gordon Douglas (1954) The Incredible Shrinking Man / Jack Arnold (1957) On the Beach / Stanley Kramer (1959) The Time Machine / George Pal (1960) 2001: A Space Odyssey / Stanley Kubrick (1968) Solyaris / Andrei Tarkovsky (1972) Close Encounters Of The Third Kind / Steven Spielberg (1977) Alien / Ridley Scott (1979) Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan / Nicholas Meyer (1982) Back To The Future / Robert Zemeckis (1985) Aliens / James Cameron (1986) Roger Corman's Frankenstein Unbound / Roger Corman (1990) Contact / Robert Zemeckis (1997) Gattaca / Andrew Niccol (1997) Primer / Shane Carruth (2004) Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind / Michael Gondry (2004) Children Of Men / Alfonso Cuarón (2006) Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes) / Nacho Vigalondo (2007) Moon / Duncan Jones (2009) Predestination / Michael And Peter Spierig (2014)
