I was HOPING I would have the honor of mentioning this one before everyone else. To most I have to say, you're amateurs. If you REALLY want depressing, there's only one answer. Barefoot Gen. Even MORE depressing than Grave of the Fireflies. I would put three up against it. The Cat who Walked by Herself for its red book scenes which are more disturbing on a large scale and two others for their bleak endings: Angel's Egg and Sea Prince and the Fire Child which ends with a much bleaker variation on Romeo and Juliet's finale.
