Nobody ever mentions it, but Sarah and the Squirrel (1982) is easily the most depressing animated movie I've ever encountered. Depressed the hell out of me as a kid.
It's about a little girl whose family gets taken by the Nazis during World War II (the implication being that they're either in a concentration camp or have been murdered) and struggles to survive alone in the wilderness.
Part of me wants to watch it again someday, but I expect it to depress me even more as an adult.
