That's a good story, puts my phony Keith Hernandez one to shame. For real, I did have Jack Clark glare directly at me as I was drunkenly mouthing off to him from the first base seats at Fenway. Trust me, a Jack Clark glare is serious shit. I shut up immediately. 😁 I said some dopey shit to Doug Flutie once at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. Truthfully, I'm lucky he didn't beat me up, or have somebody else do it. But he IS a real small guy, which is what I mentioned to him. 😁 I'm beginning to think you have a prejudice against form Cardinals first baseman. Do you hate Matt Adams as well? Can you or TheGoodMan19 give me the skinny on Keith Hernandez? I know about the coke, and I think that's why the Cards shipped him out to NY. Jack Clark replaced him maybe? And they won a World Series in '87 on speed and defense (and without Clark they probably didn't have 100 team HR). However, people seem to have a really high opinion of him (or at least his playing ability). Yet offensively his numbers don't look THAT great. Maybe I'm too biased towards big power 1B of today? Was he just the asshole version of Mark Grace, before Mark Grace? Hernandez was definitely hot-headed and wasn't always loved by his teammates. Even still, he was a great player and one of the smartest players to play during his era. It's tough to look at his numbers in his vacuum and compare them to the next generation of slugging first basemen that succeeded him. Hernandez was routinely a .300 hitter, an on-base machine and had power but didn't swing for the fences because it wasn't his game. He also redefined his position from a defensive standpoint, although not to the fanfare of his teammate at shortstop.
