I was allowed to bake a few cakes (from box mix), when I was 9-10. Mom would supervise. In adulthood, I think it's been 40 years, since I've baked a cake.
And, I remember cooking bacon, and scrambled eggs, around the same age. But, that wasn't on a standard kitchen stove. I was too small, and wouldn't have been allowed to cook bacon, standing on a chair. I was visiting my grandparents, who had a house in Oregon, with a basement where my Grandmother did wash, and hung clothes during rainy weather ... which is often, in Oregon. There was a small, old-fashioned wood-burning cook stove in the basement. I was tall enough to stand above the top of it. Under Grandma's watchful eye, I got to cook "breakfast," although I think it was later in the day. She was a teacher, and was always encouraging when it came to having kids try new things.
