The riots of the summer were terrible for America, not only for those they directly affected, but for the psyche of the nation itself. This is far, far worse. This is an attack on the very heart of our republic, both functionally and symbolically. There's a reason terrorists didn't fly planes into a Target or Joe's coffee shop. Centers of trade and government, landmarks that symbolize our culture have a greater impact than the destruction of a city block ever could. (And in case I need to repeat it, both instances are unacceptable.)
What these crackpots did yesterday weakened our republic on so many levels. They showed enemies of the state (both foreign and domestic) how easy it would be to completely destroy our infrastructure. How many terrorists, hostile governments and basement nut jobs are kicking themselves today, wishing they had thought of this? "All we needed was a group of people wearing MAGA hats and waving flags, and they'll just let us walk into the Capitol during a congressional session with who knows how many weapons and IEDs?" I want to praise the security detail for their incredible restraint, but truthfully I cannot. The lives they put at risk, in the short term and long; the stakes are too high. In the chaos of the evacuation, computers were left on, email accounts left open. Sensitive material available for anyone to leak, or sell to the highest bidder. In theory, the risk should be low, but it's just another example of how incredibly dangerous this situation was, and it remains a major national security threat.
Motive. BLM and the related protests, some of which progressed into riots-- some of which intentionally incited by agents of chaos on the other side-- were touched off by the execution of a black man in full view of a crowd of people. At that time the most recent event in a recurring theme of police brutality and systemic racism in America. Rioting and destruction should never be the answer, but you can understand why some people felt pushed to the brink of reason when they feel as if the oppression is going to crush them at any time.
Yesterday's insanity was incited by one lunatic, and carried about by (from what I could see of the coverage) a mob of possibly the least oppressed segment of humanity in history-- American Caucasians of the late 20th to early 21st centuries. Literally nobody has ever had it better than us, but we're mad as hell and we aren't going to take it anymore. They weren't being casually killed in the street by police; their guy lost an election. And he whined, and he tried to cheat and steal it away, and when all that failed, he attended a rally yesterday and told his supporters to march on the Capitol, and that "You'll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength." What did he think a crowd of people featuring guy in face paint dressed like a buffalo were going to do? He knew exactly what they would do. “Big protest in DC on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”
Just the latest disgusting display by a complete sociopath with no regard for civility, democracy or humanity; and the latest example of his followers being so far out of touch with reality that they believe the way you show patriotism is trying to subvert democracy after an election doesn't go their way, and kicking out windows at the Capitol building. As an US citizen, I'm sickened by what I saw yesterday. If you complained about rioters this summer, yet are applauding yesterday's events, you have no place in a serious discussion about politics or social issues.
Rey,
Did Biden give us a televised speech addressing the nation about this, you know, the same way he did about those storming the CB?
Did he ever once call it "an assault on the rule of law"? Nope, this is what he said - "We are a nation furious at injustice". In other words, he understands the fury people are feeling, in fact, its almost like he's saying, "it's sort of America's fault that some are feeling angry about Floyd's death but I don't like the violence".
There you go, very similar to what Trump said yesterday but what Trump said is now the worst thing anyone could ever say in life.
I see a lot corniness like this coming from the media and politicians in general.
And to you it might seem like "subverting democracy" but it's not to those STCB, They think they're standing up for democracy and want to see fair elections. Another quote -
They showed enemies of the state (both foreign and domestic) how easy it would be to completely destroy our infrastructure.
and this -
were touched off by the execution of a black man in full view of a crowd of people.
It was horrible watching Floyd die like this. No one with a clear mind could actually say they enjoyed watching that. But we know today that the man wasn't executed, he died of a drug overdose. In fact, I doubt the officers in question are going to do any serious prison time over this. And yes, that will probably spark more riots.
However, this is an entirely different topic, you can start a thread on it but this will probably be all I will say in this thread about Floyd's death.
And 'systemic racism' is debatable but again, that's another topic we can talk about later.
Then you go on to talk about whites being the least oppressed ever. Americans of all races have struggles. You just haven't been around enough to see it. No one has a "perfect life" in America or in the entire world for that matter.
Now, your quotes about Trump I will agree with. He needs to drop the election conspiracy stuff. Although, I do find it VERY hard to believe that Biden got over 80 million votes, but we have to press on and let it go. If some politicians want to challenge the election results, that's fine, let'em do it. This is democracy at stake after all. So, why not look into it?
There are some things that do seem a little suspicious about Biden winning but nothing that would make me think it's some grand conspiracy. But again, thanks to the media, every election from now on is going to be met with conspiracy nuttiness. It is what it is....
Blaming the media for yesterday's chaos is a joke. The 'liberal media' tells people Trump is wrong, so how can the liberal media be blamed when Trump tells people to riot at the capitol and they listen to him? You complain about conspiracies while insisting there is something suspicious about outcomes that didn't go in your favor. They did look into the election fraud claims, and found nothing. Thanks to Trump (who did this in advance last time, remember? He only shut up about it when he won), every election from now on is going to be met with conspiracy nuttiness.
