Been lax on this list because of the holidays and I'm not as excited over it as I thought it would be.
21. John Donaldson, another Negro Leaguer 20. Manny Ramirez 19. Todd Helton 18. Bobby Grich 17. Luis Tiant 16. Kenny Lofton 15. Andruw Jones & Jim Edmonds (defensive CF's) 14. Mark McGwire 13. Gil Hodges 12. Joe Jackson
Ok, Mr. Posnarski. Joseph Jefferson Jackson should be either #1 or #2. You can argue Bonds, but no one else. Yeah, Jackson did have an odd career arc in that he was out of the game while still in his prime. His career BA would have no been as high as .356 if he had had the down, older age years nearly every players has. But he was one of the 5-10 best hitter ever. And an incredible defensive RF. He could throw a ball from the CF wall in Comiskey to home plate from a standing position. What would his career number have been if he had been "Honest Joe" instead of "Shoeless Joe", tough to say. 1777 hits, .423 ob%, 202 sb's. He had one of his best season in 1920, .382 BA, 12 HR, 121 RBI's, at age 32. He could have had 4-6 more good years, but he was fragile, only played a near full season twice.
That being said, does he deserve to be in the Hall, fuck no. Don't give me the "Field of Dreams" bullshit abut his 1919 WS BA of .375. They were empty hits or in games that the fix might have been off, Games 6 and 7. Always cute to hear the Jackson apologists say "he had the only home run of the series. Whee, it was in Game 8, when the Black Sox were blatantly throwing the game. Jackson admitted to throwing the series. "I was promised $10,000 and given $5,000". That's enough for me. And being illiterate doesn't excuse him. I bet a lot of players at the time were illiterate. He knew what he was doing and what would happen if he got caught. Fuck him. I like what Bill James wrote. Sure, let Jackson in. After you let in all the honest players, from the superstars to the Moonlight Graham's of baseball. Let in all the honest GM's, umpires, coaches etc. Then let Jackson in.
Sorry, been fascinated with the Black Sox forever.
