I would say that showy, flashy, ornate and tinselly describe the look of a lot of 1930s films. But that's something about them that I like a lot. Some of those old movies are gorgeous to look at, especially if happen to like Art Deco.
As far as stuff like the story and the acting, the words big, grand, grandiose, extravagant and heroic are all, i would say, pretty accurate. Take the 1932 BP Oscar winner "Grand Hotel", it's all of those things. It's pretty to look at *and JC gives the best performance in it* but I did find the movie pretty boring and pretentious.
