Well to be fair he was under studio pressure to make the movie more "toy friendly" (he even pretty much apolgoized for this on the director commentary). I still think Forever was worse though (which was just tediously dull). Not sure why Burton didn't return, the Schumacher movies still take place in the same universe. Joel said some contradictory things on the subject, like "They're called comic books, not drama books". That kinda makes it sound like he wouldn't make something like Batman Begins even if he could. Burton said he basically took the hint WB didn't want him back after his crazed BDSM movie with mutants biting people's noses off ruined their Happy Meal tie-in. So the studio definitely wanted something lighter, and Joel may have overcorrected. It is obvious he had no interest in making Batman movies and it shows. Speaking of the McDonald's tie-in, I use to have all the Batman Forever glass cups they sold.
