I think there’s some subtle genius going on here. Darcy seems carefree. But she picks up on insane details, such as the scene where she quickly deduces how much is known about what’s going on. She’s smart enough she doesn’t care about acting like it. In Thor and Thor the Dark World Darcy had no to little concept of Physics. In Thor she was a College Intern so in her early 20's her major was in social sciences if I remember correctly. I just find it ridiculous that some one with little to no knowledge or instruction in Physics by that age would or even could get a Doctorate in it. I saw a study a few months ago about the racial disparity between Blacks and Whites in Post Graduate work in Physics. The main determination of the study was that no matter the race the main determining factor on if someone would get a post graduate degree in Physics was their knowledge/background in last 3 years of high school. If they didn't have the foundation of HS science then even basic intro bachelors Physics courses were well out of their league. Now in the study most Black H.S. students aren't even offered Physics in highschool so that was the main reason of the disparity. Just think of the work she would have to do to even catch up to get into a Masters or Doctorate program. She would've been anywhere from 4-8 years behind. (depending on your thinking) I don't mind her using her as a character even having her tech savy and out of the box thinker. Just don't make her field Astrophysics and call her a doctor later on. Now what would be a cool twist/joke is that her Doctorate is in Sociology not Astrophysics. She sought an internship and got it so she must have had that base knowledge to even be interested or considered. Basically she had more knowledge than her attitude might suggest, and gained vast amounts of experience through those encounters and increased knowledge. She even worked alongside people as highly regarded as Selvig. I interpret her as rather highly intelligent and her younger version as more having a youthful lack of seriousness. It’s not like Jane just picked a random cheerleader and told her to do science stuff.
