Well made family film, but 25th greatest American movie of all time? Should have won Best Picture? He gets drunk and talks funny and it's kinda sad when he leaves and humans are the real bad guys and kids are cute and family unity is great and buy Reese's Pieces because they're even greater and daddy issues but also Jesus ironically. That's all well and good, but I've just never been extremely moved by or attached to it. My apathy might be in part because I grew up more with movies inspired by it (T2, Free Willy, The Iron Giant). It deserved Best Picture over the the typical epic biography Gandhi imo. Good movie, but nothing all that unique or memorable besides Ben Kingsley's performance. The movie is in part a Jesus analogy, but you don't have to watch it that way. Speaking of the Jesus comparison, I wouldn't say humans are presented as the bad guys, just the government. The real best movie of 1982 didn't even get a nomination.
