The anthem shouldn’t be played before sporting events - if you want to keep politics out of sports, don’t play the anthem. The anthem has been hijacked by the right wing and the military industrial complex, as shown by how there are massive military displays during the anthem at NFL games, and support for the anthem now means support for America’s wars and America’s military and police. The anthem isn’t about celebrating America, it’s about celebrating the military and the police. While I love the American people and many things about America are great, I do not support the wars that we fight nor do I like the police very much, so the anthem and it’s militaristic displays make me uncomfortable. And in the NHL (National?) where there are about as many players from outside North America as there are from the United States, and many more from Canada than the United States. Yet if the game does not involve a Canadian-based team (or Buffalo), only the US national anthem is played. |
