He should have been pissed just for not being nominated in the category until 2018.
He deserved a nomination for Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X imo.
It isn't surprising that no black person has won Best Director though. Very few have even been nominated.
I think the only ones are Spike Lee for Blackkklansman, John Singleton for Boyz N the Hood, Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave and Barry Jenkins for Moonlight. I might be missing one or two.
