Because makeup and prosthetics done proper looks fantastic and it's actually there. There's a reason why Lord of Darkness looks better than either version Steppenwolf we've seen so far. Can you post the Lord of darkness photos so we can compare? And don't you like Thanos? He is not a tall guy in make up and THANK FUCK FOR THAT! Sure. By the way, I like Thanos as a character. They went with CGI and it looked good (like I said before if you were paying attention). Would you expect that to be Tim Curry?  Not sure what your deal is over me suggesting costume and makeup Ransom.
