Alien: covenant made me extremely sad

Yep.

I do respect Ridley Scott as a director, but if you watch his movies with Director's commentary tracks on, it quickly becomes clear what his strengths and weaknesses are. He's stupendous at constructing visual worlds and putting them on camera in a compelling way, and he's very good at working with actors.

But he's weak on story logic. A lot of the time it seems like he doesn't quite grasp the logic of what's going on in his own movies. IMO, for this reason he works best when he has a really strong well-written script. Which he did, with Alien. But with Prometheus he had Lindelof, who is not exactly strong on plotting himself. So it was a case of the blind leading the blind.
