If you're halfway through a season and not in the title race, you had may as well not bother carry on playing the rest of the season. It's pointless.
Which brings us to the draft. The worst team gets the #1 pick and in sense gives you the chance at the best player. It has brought on the idea of "tanking". You lose on purpose because you feel that the best player coming into the draft could change your franchise.
