The socialized world of American sports. Very few players can work the system to avoid playing for the team that drafted them. You have to be willing to hold out and risk a career. John Elway, quarterback for Denver did it in 1983. Cornelius Bennett, linebacker for the mighty Buffalo Bills did it in 1987. I can't really remember the last time a 1st round pick in the NFL held out and demanded a trade. A few years ago, a HS baseball pitcher, Matt Harrington, tried to work the MLB draft system. He ended up never getting the big payday or a shot at the majors. He works at a department store now.
A name you might have heard of, OJ Simpson, was drafted bu Buffalo in 1969. He was southern California all out and never was tactful about his feeling for Buffalo. But he couldn't go anywhere until he was too old.
Yeah but Elway, unlike most others in this position, had a Yankees career to use as leverage. If Trevor Lawrence, for example, doesn’t want to be a Jaguar, what’s his recourse? A holdout would be the only recourse. I'm not sure if the team loses rights after a year or not anymore.
I still think Cornelius Bennett was the last holdout of a high pick to go into the season.
