That trope continues to slay me. Having come late to the film, and missing the initial hype (I only watched it about six months ago), I remain somewhat dumbfounded at how not particularly good a film it actually is. Apparently its main cachet lies in its usefulness as a way of demonstrating how 'woke' one is to racial justice issues by one's having watched it.
