To be honest, in the days of yore, most TVs were fuzz, and one couldn't read the subtitles. And some people like to watch TV without their contacts or glasses, and be relaxed.. I think that's the underlying reason they don't do subtitles. I used to hate subtitles for such reasons, before TVs got better and before I got laser eye surgery in 1999 to see perfect. I still preferred the dubbed in noise, especially for kung fu movies. That was the appeal of Oriental movies. It wasn't until about 2000 when I actually got a VHS of SEVEN SAMURAI that I realized how awesome it was, even with subtitles. Knowing that some things are lost in translation, I marveled at how much wasn't lost in translation. This may be the best film ever made. I think it is better with subtitles than if it was dubbed. If it was dubbed, I would imagine there would be the comical sounding guy doing the role of Manzo or Yohei, some deep bass guy doing the voice of Gorobi or Mosuke. It wouldn't be as good. However, I could understand the nearsighted viewer next to me, if that viewer would prefer it to be dubbed. Still, it's such an incredible journey that I would think anyone would love it. One doesn't even realize how long it is, and it's non stop theatrics that make it seem like it's action packed without a single lull in the film, and I have attention deficit, so if it's non stop to me, it is truly non stop.
