To be honest, in the days of yore, most TVs were fuzz, and one couldn't read the subtitles. And some people like to watch TV without their contacts or glasses, and be relaxed.. I think that's the underlying reason they don't do subtitles. I used to hate subtitles for such reasons, before TVs got better and before I got laser eye surgery in 1999 to see perfect. I still preferred the dubbed in noise, especially for kung fu movies. I completely agree. For me, there's a few key genres- any kung fu flick, any Spaghetti Western, any 70's or 80's Italian horror movie, any Japanese giant monster movie- where dubbing, especially bad dubbing, is part of the experience.
