I don't think David Lynch cares about catering to his fans. Everything in his history has pointed to him not wanting to or caring to do that.

As far as the quality of the film, it's not his best. No argument here.

I think with Inland Empire and Twin Peaks 2 that is what he is doing. Prior to those I would agree with you. I think he tried to outdo Mullholland Dr. and in doing so went too far.

I think that is where Nolan got into trouble with Tenet, though that movie is extremely entertaining.
