I wouldn't say it was a 1990's trend specifically. Michael J. Fox and Ted Danson did it in the 1980s, among others.
I agree, though I can't really say that any of the Sienfeld cast "cashed in" besides Michael Richards with Trial & Error.
Friends is probably the most extreme example. All 6 of the cast members made the leap, though for most of them it was short lived. Remember Ed? Matt LaBlanc's baseball monkey movie.
