JJ Abrams in a good technical director in very superficial ways. He doesn't have an original bone in his body. It isn't his writing that is the main issue, it is the lack of any authenticity in the presentation. Alien: Covenant for example is a mess from a writing standpoint, but from a visual standpoint it is magnificent. J.J. Abrams could only dream of being an authentic visual filmmaker. I can actually mostly agree with that. Whedon just isn’t much better imo. His writing bit is old and tired and his direction is mediocre at best. Is there a significant gap? No. It would be funny to find out that I like both directors more than you. The Avengers - 7/10 Star Trek - 7/10 Avengers: Age of Ultron - 7/10 The rest are different levels of average for me. Abrams has the lowest low though with Rise of Skywalker (Into Darkness isn't much better) and Serenity is not my kind of movie at all. Serenity really does suffer from all the issues you bring up and in spades. It might just be my lack of emotional response when it comes to Abrams movies. Abrams has shown no signs that he could ever make a movie like Much Ado About Nothing.
