I really liked it as a kid, but on a rewatch a couple of years ago (I bought the bluray) it did seem a little lazy. It's light hearted and I enjoy it enough but it could have been a lot better. The sequel with James Earl Jones is okay as well. I'd probably give both a 5 or 5.5 out of 10.
The TV version of the story with Patrick Swayze was actually pretty good in my opinion, it also has Alison Doody from Last Crusade fame in it.
