My picks sort of fall into three categories: 1) We encounter something weird. Both "The Thing" iterations, "Alien", and "War of the Worlds" fit here for me. Though technology has advanced, we're still just hairless apes who at times don't really know what we're doing. These movies don't involve humanity's struggle to understand its identity, but more its reaction to a foreign presence. Hostile or peaceful, its just completely (no pun intended) alien territory. A few of the other movies on the list fit this category, but I picked my favorites. Sci-fi can be really interesting in the lens of whether or not the characters would be peaceful or aggressive towards a totally unknown being. Though it was far from the best movie I've ever seen, I thought "The Arrival" touched on a few of these ideas. 2) We become victims of our own evolution. "Terminator", "Blade Runner", and "Sunshine" fit here. Be it A.I. or pollution, these stories have a spine based on how humanity will eventually destroy itself. I quite like this sort of story and would throw "Children of Men" in with this. Most of the time they go the apocalyptic route, but a few (something like indie sci-fi "Upside Down") take the more emotional route. I was a big "Twilight Zone" fan growing up (still not done growing up, except that I'm already kind of old), and a lot of my favorite stories touched on this. The danger of too much unimpeded progress. Which brings me to... 3) We found answers to ancient questions that ended up being horrifying. "Prometheus" stands alone here from this list. Humanity goes through such lengths to understand itself that it doesn't realize how deep the water is, and how much we're not on everyone's list of species to look after. It's the age old question (this is not intended to go in line with any particular religion) of if you could meet your creator, would you want to? It could be enlightening or terrifying or such as that you walk away realizing that you and your species is just another grain of sand. Good list drystyx
