The Mandarin twist worked well given what Iron Man 3 was dealing with thematically, regarding what Marvel decided to do with the one-shot "All Hail The King" it doesn't matter if it was reactionary to negativity towards the twist or was planned all along what's done is done and in the short it is revealed that the REAL Mandarin is still out there and his group The Ten Rings is still lurking around in the shadows with him. Time will tell if Marvel will do anything with him down the road, I believe they will just probably not before Avengers 4 where Thanos is defeated.
