Phonics.
I remember in 1st grade we were suppose to circle the letters that started the picture.
Like church would be ch
I didn't know they meant church.
It could have been building, store , school, etc. (I know.. the cross was the tell, but I didn't get it as a kid)
Once the teacher did it in group; all us little second language speakers did fine.
So phonics
