High School was a walk in the park for me. I always got good grades without having to put much of an effort, and that was especially true for Mathematics. So it was a shock for me when I took Calculus 1 in my first semester at university and couldn’t make heads or tails of any of it. I got a passing grade but just barely. In my defense, this was also the case for everyone else in the class. The professor was just terrible. Next semester for Calculus 2 with a decent professor I understood everything and got an A. It always bugged me when people put teachers in general up on a pedestal. That's especially true today when I see some of the stuff being taught, more specifically, what's being passed as education in college classes. But that's another story. So often, it comes down to what a difference a great teacher can make. I had a horrible time in history back in high school, and was prepared for an even worse time when the subsequent year I heard my teacher was going to be "the hardest" professor....ever! Great, I thought. Turned out, I loved it! He was "hard" because he expected discipline and no screwing around, and he moved at a fast clip, so if you were goofing off, you'd fall behind. I had a blast and it started my life-long love affair with history ever since. To this day, I have a massive collection of history books thanks to that one professor and that one class. Goes to show what a difference a great teacher can make.
