I liked it quite a bit, my parents were HS graduates right about the time this was set so they could relate to it a lot. I obviously can't speak for his popularity in the early 60s, but by the 70s he was pretty well-known nationally. I'm from the Midwest and knew him well by the time I saw the movie.
Not sure how well known Wolfman Jack was outside the Southwest.
