I've never purchased a whole one. When I was in Makaha, I bought containers of fresh-cut.
The way I've seen it done, in videos, is to use a knife to cut the "prickly" sides away, and cut across the top. Then, there is a cylindrical tool that is used to cut down, through the core.
I've seen the fresh pieces for sale, here. I'll probably try those. Most canned fruit has sugary syrup added, and I don't care for that.
