That does seem odd to me. I grew up and live near the beach in a Los Angeles suburb.

Yes, the water is dirty but it's still a beautiful blue. I would frankly feel claustrophobic if I lived more than 50 miles from an ocean. I know it's all perception of course. But most of us live in such densely populated areas now.

At least when you're standing on the shore you're looking at a "no man's land".
