When I was a kid, my Dad was in the military and we were stationed in Florida for a few years... When we moved there, I was so excited to see the Ocean... But when I discovered that it was a dingy grey, the water felt yucky, and it didn't smell good... The excitement lasted for only about five minutes. Spend your vacation money on get a swimming pool instead. That does seem odd to me. I grew up and live near the beach in a Los Angeles suburb.
Yes, the water is dirty but it's still a beautiful blue. I would frankly feel claustrophobic if I lived more than 50 miles from an ocean. I know it's all perception of course. But most of us live in such densely populated areas now.
At least when you're standing on the shore you're looking at a "no man's land". Sometimes I feel claustrophobic living in Minnesota. It's like right in the middle of North America. Oddly enough I feel a little better knowing Lake Superior is technically connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Granted it would take you seven days to reach the ocean through the St. Lawrence Seaway, but it is connected.
