That does seem odd to me. I grew up and live near the beach in a Los Angeles suburb.
Yes, the water is dirty but it's still a beautiful blue. I would frankly feel claustrophobic if I lived more than 50 miles from an ocean. I know it's all perception of course. But most of us live in such densely populated areas now.
At least when you're standing on the shore you're looking at a "no man's land". Sometimes I feel claustrophobic living in Minnesota. It's like right in the middle of North America. Oddly enough I feel a little better knowing Lake Superior is technically connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Granted it would take you seven days to reach the ocean through the St. Lawrence Seaway, but it is connected. I've lived in Montana. And I didn't suffocate and die. Lol. But I am an urban guy. There's no clubbing in Montana to speak of. It's very cowboy which can be annoying for a city slicker.
But I think the Great Lakes qualify as a mass body of water, ocean-like, if not part of the ocean.
