The Thin Red Scarface (The Thin Red Line, 1998; Scarface, 1932)
After making his way to the top of the Chicago underworld, Tony Camonte is distraught when the Volstead Act is voided via the Twenty First Amendment, loses his ambition and retires to a remote farm in the North Carolina Appalachians. Flash forward a decade, and Camonte, finding no other way to make money after he gives up on farming, enlists in the Army and finds himself killing again, this time the Japanese. Inspired by the massacres and the adrenaline of fighting in the hills of Guadalcanal, Camonte runs stolen liquor throughout the front and back areas, getting most of the native population addicted to alcohol. He ponders his life throughout and looks up into the trees at the sun while quoting poetry.
