There was never a reason given by the American Federation of Musicians for the ban

Saw a Kinks documentary years ago and I think Ray said it was because one of them punched an abusive TV exec. I also read their tour promoter didn't pay them what was promised, so they asked for an up front payment for a show, didn't get it so pulled out. The promoter then reported them to the Federation.
