Olympic swimming gold medallist Buster Crabbe was chosen in 1936 over several stars to play Flash Gordon in the Flash Gordon serial, which was followed by two sequels, released by Universal in 1938 and 1940 Flash Gordon is a 1936 science fiction film serial that was shown in 13 chapters. The serial was the first screen adventure for the comic-strip character Flash Gordon, invented by Alex Raymond only two years earlier in 1934. The serial was subsequently released in a 72-minute feature version in 1936 and ranked as Universal's second-highest-grossing film of the year. Many of the of props and other elements were recycled from earlier Universal productions eg Frankenstein & The Mummy. Flash Gordon was produced with the intention of enticing an adult audience for serials. Shown in theatres in all the large cities across the United States, it was and still is highly entertaining fun, also widely successful influencing many of the super-hero costuming and films that followed.. In 1996, Flash Gordon was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant A guilty pleasure from 1936
