Yes, critics are very helpful for the general public.
Critics are also very useful when looking for old obscure movies, especially foreign language films. There is such a vast amount of movies out there that if it weren't for critics I would even know where to begin. Siskel & Ebert's Top 10 lists for example is a great resource, as are critic's lists of the greatest movies ever made.
Everybody is making lists like that. Yes and both serve the same purpose. The more sources of information the better.
Plus critics see hundreds of movies a year, whereas the general movie goer doesn't. The more movies that are seen the more helpful the list will be.
