Brie Larson will be playing the Marvel character of Captain Marvel, DC owns Captain Marvel/Shazam, who is still a male character. For decades they fought over the rights to the name "Captain Marvel " because the character originally belonged to Fawcett Comics and when DC bought the character they may or may not have also bought his name. Marvel by this time, had already created their Captain Marvel. Last I heard, DC gave up and have rebranded Captain Marvel as simply "Shazam." There was until recently a Shazam movie planned, but it got shelved, and the villain, Black Adam, to be played by Dwayne Johnson, will now battle Superman in Man of Steel 2 instead. Thanks so much for clearing that up. It's some interesting history. I didn't realize the difference, but then again, while I collected DC comics when I was in school back in the Swingin' Sixties, I never entered the Marvel Universe (as they say now) and have never been satisfied with any of the (few) 21st century superhero films I have seen. Also (just to certify my liberal credentials), I have never been offended by assigning female actors to roles that were formally understood to be male. I am looking forward to the day when my favorite TV show regenerates its title character to a woman Doctor. I actually had a little interest going with the upcoming Captain Marvel while I thought that it was the same character as the Shazam guy and wondering how it would be handled. Oh, well. We never stop learning, do we?
