Is South Macedonia a thing?
I am guessing that "North Macedonia" was a compromise that Macedonia reached with Greece. For years after Macedonia became an independent country (after the break-up of Yugoslavia) Greece blocked recognition by the EU because they claimed "Macedonia" was historically a name associated with Greece. Macedonia had to accept the cumbersome name of "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". Now I guess the two countries agreed on the new name of "North" Macedonia, to differentiate it from the Greek region of Macedonia.
No way the Greeks are giving up ownership of bragging rights to Philip and Alexander.
