I don’t subscribe to the notion that diversity is a must. Diversity is neither inherently good nor inherently bad. If it is present, fine. If not, that is fine too. Well, we're not talking about a show that only lasted 1 or 2 seasons (and therefore didn't have enough time to add new characters) or that took place in a city that is 100% white in real life. Even if you want to argue that diversity wasn't seen as something marketable back then, a show this popular could afford to take risks. In fact, when they brought in Julie in season 1 or Charlie in season 9, there was nothing weird or forced about it.
