Sure it helps their career because Disney will give them other films or open doors for them. It's an investment for Marvel-Disney--this is the PR face for their projects.
Ed Norton probably suffered in his career because he rejected the Hulk series--caused them trouble. It doesn't look like he's had that much of a career since. However, other actors have said things dried up in the 2000s.
Billy Bob Thornton said it. If you are a serious actor who believes in creative control or range then forget it. Hollywood is far too restricted now to provide much opportunity for a range.
I wonder if the reason we don't see actors bankrolling their own films is because Hollywood won't let them. The distribution side would prevent them from having access so it's a waste of money. Or there are other disincentives.
